In the Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5-7) Jesus announces to His listeners that the coming kingdom would have rewards. He explains that no one can enter that kingdom without having the right kind of righteousness, and contrasts real righteousness (which brings eternal rewards from God) and fake righteousness (which brings temporal rewards from people). He challenges His listeners to pursue real righteousness, and to think eternally.
